Cerignola Olives

Cerignola Olives

The Cerignola olives, known also as Bella di Cerignola (literlally translated as “Beautiful from Cerignola”) is a very popular variety of table olive. It finds its origin in Puglia (region in the South-East of the Italian Peninsula), in the Foggia area surrounding the namesake town from which they get their name. Their particular climate create the ideal conditions for an exceptional final product. These pugliesi olives are of rather large dimensions (reaching up to 18 grams each), of a vibrant green colour and with a unique sweet and light flavour. It is for their large size that they are favoured by our North American market (where they are the most famous and requested amongst all olives). They were also the first olives to be exported to the United States at the beginning of the 19th century. Traditionally they are picked in October, and from their treatment you obtain the Bella di Daunia olive – with protected designation of origin status. According to some, their cultivation dates back to the 4th century, whilst other sources claim that they date back to Roman times. They are amongst the most well-known and established table olives in the world, and they go exquisitely well accompanied by goat's cheese. With only Cerignola green olives, water, salt and a little citric acid in their preparation (to balance the ph), they are a truly healthy food, containing only 1 gram of carbohydrates and 107 calories for every 100 grams of product. Why not reward yourself with a platter of delicious cheese and crackers to accompany our tasty Cerignola olives, for an easy and delicious cocktail hour?
